The decorations need to come down, preferably before New Year’s Day.
My favorite part of a holiday is the return to normal.

I give myself a little incentive. I put my Charlie Brown-size tree on a display table where I keep some of my collection of animal models, I mean figurines. The tree skirt covers them up for a while, and that makes putting the tree and things away a chance to reveal the little animals instead. OK, I’m easily pleased.
How dare you?!? Liturgically, the tree stays up til epiphany. Practically, it stays up until MLK day (free time plus enlisting kids to help). And some years it stays up until the end of January and is repurposed as a birthday tree for my youngest (ornaments off/stuffed animals on).
It’s only a problem if the decorations are still up at Valentines Day

Don’t forget about Epiphany. Leave the lights up until Jan 6 for the Magi.
